    BERLIN AND THE RELICT BORDER: TRACES OF A CARTOGRAPHIC VOLUPTAS BETWEEN LITERATURE AND TOURISM

    L’articolo si apre con una premessa teorica che prende in considerazione il paradigma emergente della cosiddetta “cartografia post-rappresentazionale”. Basandosi, secondo una prospettiva umanistica, su tali recenti acquisizioni teoriche nell’ambito degli studi cartografici, nonché su fondamentali lavori dedicati alla cartografia letteraria e alla cartografia turistica, l’articolo perviene in seguito ad affrontare il caso di studio di Berlino e della “memorializzazione” del Muro per suggerire l’opportunità di indagare l’immaginazione e l’esperienza cartografica attraverso testi e pratiche di ambito letterario e turistico.The article opens with a presentation of the theoretical framework, referring to the emergence of the so called “post-representational cartography”. Taking into consideration recent theories developed within a humanistic perspective in the field of map studies and at the same time some seminal works in literary cartography and tourism cartography, the present essay introduces the memorialisation of the Berlin Wall as a case study, in order to suggest the opportunity of researches on cartographic imagination and map experience through texts and practices of literature and tourism

    Repetition, movement and the visual ontographies of urban rephotography: learning from Smoke (1995)

    none2noEngaging with a scene of the iconic movie Smoke (by Wayne Wang, 1995) in which a rephotographic project is sensitively elicited, this paper addresses the technique of repeat photography to contribute to methodological debates that have arisen within the nascent ‘Mobility and Humanities’ subfield. Through a humanistic perspective, the paper reviews and expands the nexus between mobility, photography and the urban by comparing the technique with three methodological issues: the blurring of supposed binaries, such as traditional/innovative, static/moving and fast/slow; the possibility of grasping the mobilities of the world in a post-human vein; and the opportunity to also consider techniques as sites for reflection. To address these issues, the paper draws from philosophies of movement, post-phenomenological and object-oriented stances and visual and urban cultural geographies. With reference to the urban realm, this paper proposes three perspectives on rephotography, namely (1) rephotography as a practice of slow and rhythmic attunement with circumstantial spacetimes moving backwards and forwards; (2) rephotography as a visual ontography that displaces the human and opens up space for the apprehension of the agency and mobility of things; and (3) rephotography as a continual process of activation of moving gazes on cities and their imaginaries.noneTania Rossetto; Alberto VanoloRossetto, Tania; Vanolo, Albert

    Hacia un sistema de alerta regional para prevenir la roya del café y sus impactos sociales

    Las epidemias de roya ocurridas en América Latina d esde el 2008 (Colombia, 2008-2011; América Central, México y el Caribe, a partir del 2012; Per ú, Ecuador, a partir del 2013) han tomado desprevenidos a todos los actores de los sectores c afetaleros de los países afectados, causando pérdidas económicas millonarias, pérdidas de trabaj o, y hasta problemas de seguridad alimentaria. En respuesta a esta crisis, los países de la región centroamericana y del Caribe han estado desarrollando, individualmente o con el apoyo de di versas organizaciones internacionales, sistemas nacionales de vigilancia para evitar futuras epidem ias de roya del café, y de otras plagas y enfermedades. La problemática a resolver se define en tres puntos principales: (i) Debido a que las plagas y patógenos tienen capacidad de dispersión, es import ante, contar con una coordinación regional que permita considerar los riesgos epidémicos evaluados en países vecinos para la evaluación de su propio riesgo. (ii) Es importante lograr que los si stemas de alerta en desarrollo en los países tengan un mayor poder predictivo de las epidemias, y no se an basados únicamente en vigilancia. (iii) Las alertas de riesgos fitosanitarios y las recomendaci ones de manejo pueden no estar seguidas de acciones por parte de los productores, por lo cual un sistema de alerta debe contemplar la posibilidad de prevenir crisis de orden social, y n o únicamente de orden fitosanitario. En el marco del proyecto PROCAGICA, se propone el d esarrollo de un sistema de vigilancia y adquisición de datos económicos, como rentabilidad del cultivo (califica el manejo y la vulnerabilidad social), fenológicos, como potencial productivo (ca lifica la resistencia fisiológica de la planta y la vulnerabilidad social), meteorológicos, como las ll uvias (el inicio de la época de lluvias señala el i nicio de los tratamientos químicos), el agua libre, la te mperatura (informan sobre las condiciones para la repetición del ciclo), y fitosanitarios, como la in cidencia de roya (para seguir el avance de la(s) epidemia (s) y anticipar crisis sociales). Este sis tema de monitoreo de datos se acoplará con modelos de pronóstico de la roya y un sistema experto que p ermita la toma de decisión de acuerdo al riesgo estimado de epidemia o de crisis social. Entre los indicadores por tomar en cuenta al momento de definir el riesgo, estarán los riesgos estimados de la misma forma en las zonas o países vecinos.     Haploid: relation to the prejudice of life for art

    A partir dos ensinamentos de Harold Rosenberg este artigo explora as potenciais relações entre Arte, Biologia e Sexualidade através da metafórica imagem do “haploide.” A questão colocada foi a seguinte: Qual o papel da arte na vida humana? As ideias de Rosenberg demonstram que arte não trata apenas de beleza e contemplação, mas remete-se também à relação entre os indivíduos, às contradições da vida. Na performance estende-se para o diálogo entre o artista e a audiência. A discussão do autor aborda: o efêmero e a liberdade na arte, e a vida e a morte na Biologia. Reprodução sexual,  células haploides, e preconceito sexual são também discutidos pelo autor. A conclusão é de que a arte reside numa rede de problemas, ansiedades e incertezas que implicam numa realidade que existe para além do dia a dia e que está em constante movimento por novas direções.Based on the teachings of Harold Rosenberg, this paper explored potential relationships between art, biology, and sexuality, through the metaphorical image of the “haploid.” The question was posed: What is the role of art opposite human life? Based on the ideas of Rosenberg, the author contends that art is not only beauty and contemplation, but is also the relationship between individuals. The author contends also that art reveals the contradictions of life itself, and in performance is the dialogue between the artist and the audience. In the discussion, the author touches on: ephemerality and freedom within art, life and death as per biology. The author also discusses sexual reproduction, haploid cells, and veiled prejudice towards sexuality. The author concludes that art resides within a web of problems, anxieties and uncertainties, which reference a reality that exists beyond the everyday, and is constantly moving in new directions

    Embodying the Map: Tourism Practices in Berlin

    Maps are often considered by tourism scholars as superimposed representations that reduce visitors to passive executors of pre-designed routes. Combining new post-representational perspectives in map studies with a concept of tourism as a corporeal, vividly lived and active experience, this article highlights the tensions between representation/power and practice/ resistance within tourism cartography. The case study of the German capital is used to illustrate the concept that tourists can experience a ‘flirtatious’, intentional and enriching encounter with their destinations ‘dwelling in’, rather than passively enacting or subverting cartographic representations. Through an autoethnographical account and a cinematic-cartographical reading, the author explores the role of actual and virtual embodiment in the experiencing of map spaces, suggesting that Berlin’s ‘cartographic anxiety’ need not be understood as a form of tourism’s power of seduction

    The Map, the Other and the public visual image

    This article explores the connection between Cartography and Otherness, and intersects map and visual studies with the question of racial/ethnic identity. With the aim of making arguments through images, a visual/verbal text is staged to reflect on the \u2018Map- Other\u2019 connection in past and present times. Inspired by the epistemological turn from representation towards practice currently experienced within map theory, the article interrogates the various creative ways in which art, advertising, public communication and related fields enable post-representational ways of portraying maps. Public visual images of cartography can be read not only as an exposure of the firm, ideological meaning of maps, but also as illustrations of how maps work as shared, embodied and empowering objects. The treatment of maps as socialised, performed and relational thereby results in an involvement of Others as protagonists rather than subjects
